A larger yard can allow more putting lines and a separate chipping position, but every cup should have a purpose. Tell us what you want to practice and how you’ll reach the green from the house. We’ll discuss the shape, contours and turf options during the visit.

In a smaller golf-community yard, a simple green with clear walking room may be a better fit. Bring association requirements early so the proposed footprint can take them into account.

Leave existing systems and everyday routes in the plan.

Longs properties include rural lots and subdivision yards, so the work starts with the actual property. If you have a septic system, show us its recorded location and get guidance before proposing work over or near it. Identify irrigation and access routes too.

For dogs, a separate area by the door can keep pet use apart from the putting surface. Include access for waste pickup and cleaning. The estimate should identify turf area, preparation, edges and any additional work rather than relying on one unexplained square-foot price.

Longs has four golf courses of its own: Long Bay Club, a Jack Nicklaus design; Aberdeen Country Club, Tom Jackson's 27 holes in Meadows, Highlands and Woodlands nines; Colonial Charters, open to the public on Charter Drive; and Crown Park (GolfPass, MBGolf, Colonial Charters). River Hills is next door in Little River.

A backyard green lets you work on the three-footers any evening, without a tee time. With a bigger lot you can go past a single cup: several holes on different slopes, a fringe around the edge, and a spot far enough out to hit a real pitch.

Rural acreage, golf lots and new builds.

Longs has three kinds of yard. Along SC 9, SC 905 and the county roads between them are older homes on half-acre and bigger lots, many on well and septic. That SC 905 stretch runs through Hickory Grove, an unincorporated Horry County community between Conway and Longs — no town hall or HOA of its own, so the same well-and-septic siting and county review below apply. Then the golf subdivisions of the 1980s and 1990s, such as Colonial Charters, Long Bay and Aberdeen; Colonial Charters alone mixes houses, townhomes, patio homes and condos around its course. And the newest builder communities: the Bluffs at Sun Colony, Chestnut Farms and The Village at Longs.

On a new build, grading can leave hard-packed ground that grass struggles to root in. On a well-and-septic lot, show us the drain field when we come out, so the layout keeps clear of it. Either way, the base is built for the ground you actually have.

A big lawn takes a lot of water, and out here that often means running the well through the dry weeks. Turf takes none, so the well is left for the house.

County requirements and covenants are separate.

For a Longs property, confirm the jurisdiction and ask Horry County about the proposed turf, excavation, grading, drains and related construction. A private-yard project still needs that scope checked.

If the property belongs to an association, request its current covenants and architectural review requirements before finalizing the layout. If there is no association, county requirements and any property easements still need to be considered.
