Heat rules for a turf field on both sides of the Grand Strand
The short answer
Which heat rule applies to a turf field near the NC/SC line, and where does play stop?
It depends on which state association your school competes under. SCHSL's guidelines suspend all outdoor practice and competition at a WBGT reading of 92.1°F or above, measured on the playing surface. NCHSAA's current chart suspends practice at 90°F, but lets competition continue with mandatory water breaks. Confirm which body governs your school before you plan the field.
The decision: which chart governs your field
A school, club or academy near the North Carolina/South Carolina line has to answer one question before a turf field goes on the drawing board: which state athletic association’s heat chart applies to this program. South Carolina schools follow the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL). North Carolina schools follow the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). The two charts don’t match, and the mismatch matters for anyone planning shade, cooling and practice scheduling around a field.
Both states use a hard stop measured in Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), which combines air temperature, humidity and solar radiation into one on-site number. Neither chart is written in degrees Fahrenheit air temperature or heat index, so a forecast alone doesn’t answer the question. The reading has to come from a device at the field.
South Carolina. SCHSL’s guidelines suspend or postpone both practice and competition once WBGT reaches 92.1°F or above. There’s no exception that lets competition continue past that point.
North Carolina. NCHSAA’s current chart suspends all practices at 90°F WBGT, but competition may continue past 90°F with mandatory water breaks set by the gameday administrator. Practice and competition split apart at that number, which is a real difference from South Carolina’s approach.
A program near the state line that plays schools from both associations should know both charts, not just its own.
What each association’s rule actually requires
SCHSL, dated April 2024. The guidelines call for a scientifically approved on-site WBGT thermometer, recalibrated every two years or sooner if the manufacturer recommends it. Readings are taken directly on the playing surface, 30 minutes before activity and every 30 minutes after. Phone apps aren’t accepted as a substitute. Below the 92.1°F stop point, the chart still restricts activity in steps:
- 87.0-89.9°F: practice capped at two hours; football is restricted to helmets, shoulder pads and shorts, with all protective equipment removed for conditioning; at least four rest breaks per hour of four minutes each.
- 90.0-92.0°F: practice capped at one hour, with no protective equipment and no conditioning activity; 20 minutes of rest breaks required within that hour. High-intensity competitions where breaks aren’t possible, such as cross country meets, are delayed until the reading drops below 90 or canceled.
- Football warmups: helmets and shoulder pads come off once WBGT passes 87.0°F.
- At kickoff, a reading between 87.0°F and 92.1°F triggers a mandatory three-minute hydration break at the midpoint of every quarter, helmets off, unlimited water.
- 92.1°F and above: all outdoor workouts stop, and competitions are postponed until the reading falls back below that line, in every sport.
NCHSAA, current 2026 WBGT Index and Athletic Activity Chart. Below 90°F, the chart steps down through rest-break intervals as the reading climbs — every 30 minutes under 80°F, every 25 minutes at 80.0-84.9°F, every 20 minutes at 85.0-87.9°F, and every 15 minutes at 88.0-89.9°F. A cold or ice immersion pool is required on site starting at 85.0°F, and pads and equipment come off once the reading reaches 88.0°F. At 90°F or above, all practices are suspended. Competition is the exception: it may continue at 90°F or above, with mandatory water breaks as the gameday administrator sets them. That’s a change from NCHSAA’s earlier 2015 guideline, which read only “90 or Above: SUSPEND PRACTICE” without addressing competition separately — the current chart is the one to cite and to follow.
Both charts change WBGT devices, procedures and numbers over time. Get the current version from your athletic director before you finalize a field plan, and note the date on whatever copy you’re working from.
Why the on-site reading is a field-planning question
SCHSL is specific that the WBGT reading is taken directly on the playing surface, not from a nearby weather station or a general campus reading. That single requirement turns the heat rule into a site plan question, not just a scheduling one:
- Where does the thermometer go? On the field itself, in the location where the team will actually be. A reading from a shaded sideline or an adjacent grass field describes a different microclimate.
- What about turf specifically? WBGT measures air temperature, humidity and solar radiation above the surface — it isn’t a measurement of how hot the turf itself gets underfoot. - Where’s the cold-immersion setup? NCHSAA’s chart calls for a cold or ice immersion pool on site once WBGT reaches 85.0°F for practice. SCHSL’s guidelines require the same category of cooling equipment as a primary prevention strategy. Both belong on the drawings, not added after the fact.
- Where’s the shade for breaks? Both charts require frequent, timed rest breaks well before the stop point. A field plan that has no shaded rest area nearby forces those breaks into full sun.

Questions to settle before the project is final
- Which association governs this program — SCHSL or NCHSAA — and does the school ever host or travel to the other state’s teams?
- Who owns the WBGT device and its calibration schedule, and where will it sit on this specific field?
- Where does the cooling station go — cold or ice immersion, shade, water — relative to the sideline and the locker room?
- What’s the fallback plan for practices when the chart says stop: an indoor space, a rescheduled slot, or a modified session?
- For programs that play across the line, has the visiting team’s athletic director confirmed which chart applies to that specific contest?
None of these questions changes because the field is turf instead of grass. They change because of which chart your program answers to, and the fact that both stop points are measured live, on the field, not looked up from a forecast.

- Confirm SCHSL or NCHSAA governs your program, and pull the current dated chart from your athletic director.
- Place the WBGT device where SCHSL requires it: directly on the playing surface.
- Mark cooling and shade locations on the site plan, not as an afterthought.
- Name a fallback location or time for practices that hit the stop point.
