Is artificial turf suitable for a children’s play area?

It can be an option, but there is no blanket safety answer for every turf or play area. Consider heat, equipment and falls, the documented materials and routine care. Under play equipment, confirm the surfacing requirements and obtain test information for the complete proposed system before installation.

Heat is the first thing to plan for

Turf in full sun gets hot. In a Brigham Young University study, synthetic turf averaged 117°F from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., against 78°F for natural grass, and peaked at 200°F on a 98°F day.

That matters more for kids than for adults. New Jersey’s environment department notes that children “are at greater risk of experiencing a burn related injury as they are more likely to be in greater contact with the synthetic turf surface.” Kids also handle heat worse. They have more skin for their size and sweat less efficiently, and they “may not readily perceive ‘thermal discomfort,’” so they rely on adults to call them in.

The federal playground guidelines say the same about every surface: direct sunlight “can heat playground equipment and playground surfacing enough to cause burns, even in mild weather” (CPSC).

Shade is what works. In a 2024 analysis of 23 studies, sun against shade moved the turf surface by about 25°C, roughly 45°F. Put the play area where the afternoon shade falls, or build shade over it. The full numbers are in how hot artificial turf gets.

Falls: what the playground guidelines say

Under play equipment, the question is what happens when a child falls. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s handbook is direct:

  • “Grass and dirt are not considered protective surfacing because wear and environmental factors can reduce their shock-absorbing effectiveness.”
  • “Carpeting and mats are also not appropriate unless they are impact-tested to and comply with ASTM F1292.”

ASTM F1292 is the lab test that gives a surface its critical height: “the fall height below which a life-threatening head injury would not be expected to occur.” The handbook says that rating “should be greater than or equal to the fall height of the highest piece of equipment on the playground.”

Turf itself sits in a gap. When the CPSC updated its handbook in 2025, it noted that synthetic turf use under playgrounds is growing and ASTM is developing a standard for it, but “at this time, CPSC does not have data on the installation and testing of synthetic turf supporting its inclusion in the Handbook” (Federal Register notice).

So under a swing set or climber, plan turf as a tested system: turf over a shock pad, with an F1292 critical height that covers your tallest play surface. For comparison, the handbook’s table for untested loose fill protects to 4 feet with 9 inches of sand, 7 feet with 9 inches of wood mulch, and 10 feet with 6 inches of rubber mulch.

Two more points from the handbook:

  • Keep a clear zone. For climbers and similar equipment, the use zone extends at least 6 feet out in every direction.
  • It’s written for public playgrounds. Childcare centers, parks and apartment complexes follow it. Home swing sets have their own standard, ASTM F1148, but the fall principle is the same.

Scrapes, sprains and burns

Turf can change the kind of injury. New Jersey’s study found that some evidence points to dislocations, cuts, fractures and ankle injuries being more likely on natural grass, “while contusions/abrasions, strains/sprains, and burns are more likely on synthetic turf.” It adds that there are very few good studies for youth sports, so results from adult athletes don’t transfer neatly to kids.

Germs

Bacteria live on turf, as they do on any outdoor surface. In one study New Jersey summarized, all 40 fields tested positive for bacteria. Forty-two percent had at least one sample with Staphylococcus aureus genes, and 70 percent had at least one with methicillin-resistance genes. Indoor fields had more of the staph genes, possibly because sunlight disinfects outdoor surfaces.

Infill holds on, too. A 2020 lab study recovered MRSA from infill up to 96 hours after contamination, and sand held it longest. For a family yard, that’s a reason to rinse the surface regularly and pick up after pets, not a reason to panic.

What’s in the turf

This is where products differ. New Jersey’s study notes that “detectable levels of lead have been found in synthetic turf because lead-based pigments are used in its manufacturing.” In a small pilot study it summarized, metals in the blood of young players didn’t rise after activity on outdoor turf.

Florida’s standard for home lawns prohibits heavy metals and intentionally added PFAS, and keeps rubber infill to the footprint of playground equipment (Rule 62-308.100). Atlantic Beach, Florida, requires turf “free of hazardous materials and heavy metals” (city guidelines). Ask for the selected product documentation in writing. A material rule does not replace planning for heat, falls and ongoing care.

A safer play area, step by step

  1. Put the play area in afternoon shade, or add a shade sail or pergola over it.
  2. Monitor conditions before and during play. Move the activity to a cooler surface when needed; do not use a brief hand test as clearance to play.
  3. Follow footwear guidance. The CPSC handbook calls for footwear on hot surfacing. Shoes do not replace shade, supervision or a decision to move play when conditions are unsuitable.
  4. Under equipment, use a tested system: turf over a shock pad, rated to ASTM F1292 for your highest play surface.
  5. Keep the use zone clear, at least 6 feet around climbers and similar equipment.
  6. Rinse it regularly and pick up after pets.
  7. Ask for the product’s documentation on lead and heavy metals.

Common questions

Is turf OK under a swing set or play structure?

Only as a tested system. The CPSC's playground handbook says carpet, mats and similar surfaces aren't appropriate unless they're impact-tested to ASTM F1292. Under equipment, that means turf over a shock pad, with a tested critical height at least equal to the highest play surface.

Does artificial turf get too hot for kids?

It can in full summer sun. In a Brigham Young University study, turf averaged 117°F across the day against 78°F for grass. Kids are closer to the surface and touch it more, so plan shade and a cooler alternative, and assess conditions before and during play. A quick touch does not establish a safe play period.

Is rubber infill safe for kids?

The research is still coming in. In a small pilot study summarized by New Jersey's environment department, metals in blood didn't rise after play on outdoor turf. Florida's home-lawn standard keeps rubber infill off the lawn but allows it within the footprint of playground equipment. If you'd rather avoid rubber, natural infill over a shock pad is an option.

Should kids wear shoes on turf?

On hot days, yes. The CPSC handbook tells supervising adults to make sure children wear footwear to prevent burns on hot surfacing. Do not assume that time of day or shade alone makes the surface comfortable for bare feet; check conditions before play.
