The short answer

When should a synthetic sports field be replaced?

Published guidance commonly places a maintained synthetic field’s surface life around ten to twelve years, but age alone cannot establish whether a field is fit for play. Use the system’s requirements, inspections and applicable performance testing to plan maintenance and renewal. Start budgeting before the surface reaches the end of its useful condition.

The number: about 10 to 12 years

The clearest recent figure comes from New Jersey’s environment department: “With proper maintenance, synthetic turf fields are expected to last approximately 10-12 years, at which point the surface components must be removed and replaced.”

One industry estimate runs a little shorter: usually 8 to 10 years, and up to 10 to 12 with good care (Sports Venue Calculator). Both point the same way. A decade is a fair planning number, and maintenance decides which end of the range you get.

What wears a field out

Four things do most of the damage.

Sunlight. Turf fibers are plastic, and ultraviolet light breaks plastic down. A UN Environment Programme panel reports that polyethylene with no UV protection turned brittle after 300 hours of accelerated weathering, while a UV absorber combined with light stabilizers showed little degradation out to 1,300 hours. The fiber’s UV package is part of its lifespan.

Lost and compacted infill. On a sports field the infill is typically 25 to 40 millimeters deep, and it does part of the cushioning, according to the New Jersey study. It warns that “if installation fails to produce a well-draining field or the field is poorly maintained, infill losses can be significant.” Less infill means a harder, faster-wearing surface.

Water. Fields can be built for heavy rain, but “these fields may be severely damaged during flooding,” the same study says, particularly where rubber pellets float away. It notes guidance from New York City’s parks department against building synthetic turf fields in or near the 100-year flood zone.

Heavy use. Turf’s big advantage is that it’s playable right after rain. That also means more hours of cleats on the same fibers every season.

Infill is the part you replace most

Infill does a lot of the work on a field. It holds the fibers upright, adds shock absorption and helps drainage, according to the New Jersey study. It’s usually a mix of rubber or plastic granules, though sand, walnut shells, coconut fiber, cork or silica can take their place.

It also migrates. Pellets that wash or kick out of a field “break into smaller pieces which, if they are less than 5 mm, are considered microplastics.” Heavier infills, such as coated sand, are less likely to wash away in heavy rain. Keeping infill at its specified depth is the simplest way to keep hardness in check and slow the wear.

Gmax: the test that says a field is too hard

Looks aren’t the best guide to when a field is done. Hardness is. Gmax is a surface hardness test: a weight is dropped onto the turf at set points, and the score shows how much of the impact the surface absorbs. The harder the field, the higher the number.

Washington, DC’s Department of General Services publishes how it runs the test on public fields:

  • Method: ASTM F355-A and F1936.
  • Limit: “The reported GMAX value for all test points on a field should be less than 200.”
  • Coverage: three drops at each of 10 locations, 30 drops per field.
  • Frequency: every year.
  • Response: a single score over 200 closes the field for maintenance, with repairs ranging from an infill top-off (2 to 3 days) to replacing sections (2 to 3 weeks).

A field that keeps failing Gmax after infill is topped up is telling you the system underneath is worn. That’s usually when replacement planning starts in earnest.

Care that stretches the life

Turf fields trade mowing and watering for grooming and infill top-ups. The New Jersey study stresses that “maintenance is essential to proper hydrologic functioning”: a field that stops draining wears faster and loses infill.

In practice:

  • groom regularly, so the fibers stand up and the infill stays level;
  • top up infill in goal mouths, batter’s boxes and other high-wear spots;
  • test Gmax every year and keep the reports;
  • keep the drainage clear, especially after big storms.

What replacement involves

Taking out a full field takes about two to four working days before new turf goes down, by one industry estimate (Sports Venue Calculator). The bigger question is the base. If it’s still level and draining, it can be reused. If not, it’s rebuilt.

A local example shows what a full rebuild covers. At West Nassau High School in Callahan, the 2025 field project included excavating up to 7.5 inches of the old surface, a new drainage base, and new turf with custom midfield logos and end-zone lettering (Nassau County Record).

The old turf mostly goes to a landfill. New Jersey found landfill or incineration is standard practice, “despite claims that specific components may be recycled or reused.”

Rules to check at replacement time

  • Colorado: artificial turf on athletic fields of play was exempted from the state’s 2024 turf law (SB24-005), and the 2025 amendment defines sports fields as functional turf (HB25-1113). Our Colorado turf law guide has the detail.
  • Horry County: confirm the stormwater review path for the full replacement or reconstruction scope, including excavation, drains and outfalls (county permitting guidance).
  • Florida: the state’s 2026 turf standard doesn’t apply to athletic fields (Florida DEP). Your county’s stormwater rules still do.

Planning checklist for field managers

  1. Record the install date and the product spec, including the fiber and infill.
  2. Test Gmax every year, and compare against the new-field baseline.
  3. Keep infill at its specified depth, especially in high-wear zones.
  4. Watch for the signs: seams that keep loosening, color fading toward gray-green, and loose fibers and infill piling up at the edges.
  5. Check the base and drainage before you specify replacement turf.
  6. Start planning a couple of seasons ahead, so the work fits the off-season.

Can the base be reused when the turf is replaced?

Often, if it's still level, compacted and draining. Reusing a sound base saves a lot of work and time. If it has settled, holds water or was never built to drain, it gets repaired or rebuilt before new turf goes down.

What happens to the old turf?

Mostly landfill. New Jersey's environment department found that landfill or incineration is still standard practice. It reports that recycling synthetic turf is held back by high costs, too few facilities and weak policy.
