The short answer
Does rain drain through artificial turf?
Rain can pass through turf made with drainable backing, but the installed base, underlying ground and drainage route determine what happens next. A product’s drainage rating is not a guarantee against puddles or flooding. Assess the site and describe the water route before choosing the installation details.
Rain goes down through four layers
Rain doesn’t run off the top of well-built turf. It goes down, through four layers:
- The turf and its backing. The backing is perforated or fully permeable, so water passes straight through the carpet.
- The infill. The sand or granules between the blades hold the fibers up, and they drain too, as New Jersey’s environment department describes it.
- The stone base. Open, clean stone holds water for a while and passes it down or sideways.
- The soil. Everything above ends up here.
The first three are chosen and built. The fourth is whatever your yard already has, and it usually decides how the whole system performs.
The ground sets the real limit
New Jersey’s environment department puts it clearly: “Just because a turf product can drain the standard permeability rate of 10 inches per hour, for example, it does not mean the ground underneath will infiltrate at that same rate.” If the soil is heavy in clay or other fine material, it “can quickly become saturated, reducing absorption capacity and leading to more runoff.”
It also warns that “poor installation and inadequate drainage systems can exacerbate flooding.” So the useful question isn’t whether turf drains. It’s where the water goes after it leaves the base. Each of our three markets answers that differently.
Denver metro: clay that swells
Much of the metro sits on clay that holds water and swells. The Colorado Geological Survey says swelling soils can “expand up to 20% by volume when exposed to water.” Water that soaks down and sits in clay does two kinds of harm: it drains slowly, and the ground moves.
On clay, the base has to carry water away, not just store it. Grading matters as much as stone. The Survey’s guide to landscaping on swelling soil recommends ground that falls 10 percent over the first 10 feet from a foundation (CGS Special Publication 14), so water leaving the turf heads away from the house.
The Grand Strand: fast sand, high water
Sand moves water quickly. The USDA rates Baymeade fine sand at 6 to 20 inches an hour through its top three feet (USDA). The catch is the water table. Under Leon fine sand, “the water table is at depths of 6 to 18 inches for 1 to 4 months during most years” (USDA).
When the water table is that close, the sand is already full, and fast soil doesn’t help. A base on those lots has to hold a storm’s worth of water or move it to somewhere lower. More on building for coastal ground is on our Grand Strand page.
Northeast Florida: wet flats and summer storms
Most of the mapped ground here drains poorly. USDA soil data puts 71.4% of mapped acres in Duval County, 78.5% in St. Johns and 82.2% in Nassau in the poorly or very poorly drained classes. In St. Johns, 75.7% of mapped acres have the water table within 6 inches of the surface at some point in a normal year (USDA Soil Data Access).
Then the rain comes in a block: roughly 28.8 inches at Jacksonville from June through September in a normal year (NOAA). Florida’s 2026 standard for home lawns treats the layers as one system. It requires washed base material, water passing through the turf, backing and base, and no compacting the soil beneath to the point that percolation suffers (Rule 62-308.100). What “drains well” looks like on paper
A few local rules put numbers on it:
- Atlantic Beach, Florida: turf certified to drain at least 100 inches an hour, over at least 4 inches of #57 stone under #89 stone, with no paver sand, crushed fines or screenings, and light compaction only (city guidelines).
- North Myrtle Beach: a surface counts as pervious only if it shows at least 2 inches an hour of infiltration, is installed to spec, passes inspection and is maintained (Sec. 23-129.4).
- Thornton, Colorado: for its rebate, backing that drains at least 2 inches an hour over at least 3 inches of compacted aggregate (Thornton Water).

Where turf can drain worse than a lawn
This is where installs go wrong. UF/IFAS Extension notes that turf laid over compacted soil “reduces infiltration” and increases the volume and speed of runoff. Its EP612 publication cites research in which synthetic turf lawns had more runoff and held less water than living lawns (UF/IFAS).
A base has to be firm enough to stay flat and open enough to pass water. On clay that balance is tight, and on a high water table it’s tighter.
Check your yard before you build
- Watch the yard after a big storm. Note where water stands and for how long.
- Find the low spots and downspouts. That water has to go somewhere.
- Know your ground: clay, fast sand, or sand over a high water table.
- Ask how water leaves the base, not just how fast the turf drains.
- Test it after installation. Pour a bucket on the lowest spot and watch it disappear.

Common questions
Will artificial turf puddle after heavy rain?
Not if the base and the ground can take the water. Puddles come from low spots, a base packed with fines, or soil that's already full. New Jersey's environment department notes that poor installation and inadequate drainage can make flooding worse, which is why the ground gets checked before the base is designed.
Does turf count as impervious surface?
It depends on your town. North Myrtle Beach counts a surface as pervious only if it drains at least 2 inches an hour, is installed to spec, passes inspection and is maintained. Atlantic Beach, Florida, counts turf as permeable for lot coverage when water can pass through both the turf and the base. Horry County's code doesn't name turf at all.
Can heavy rain wash the infill away?
Light infill can. New Jersey's environment department warns that rubber pellets are buoyant and may wash away, and advises heavier infills such as coated sand or zeolite where heavy rain is common.
Does turf drain better than a lawn?
Not automatically. UF/IFAS Extension cites research in which synthetic turf lawns had more runoff and held less water than living lawns, largely because the soil underneath gets compacted. A base built for the ground, without over-compacting it, is what makes the difference.
