The short answer
Can artificial turf go under a tree?
Sometimes, but the edge usually belongs well back from the trunk. Most tree roots grow in the top two feet of soil and spread past the canopy, and the digging, compacting and stone base of a turf install all happen in that layer. Florida's statewide standard bars turf inside a drip line unless a certified arborist signs off. Where turf does go near a tree, keep the base shallow and loose, and mulch the ground by the trunk.
Roots sit shallow and spread wide
Most people picture tree roots going down. Mostly, they go out.
Colorado State University Extension gives a rule of thumb: assume the vast majority of a tree’s roots are in the top two feet of soil, spread as wide as the tree is tall. In compact or clay soil, it says 90 to 95% of roots sit in the top foot, and half sit in the top 4 to 6 inches.
CSU’s fact sheet on protecting trees during construction puts it another way. The large woody roots are mostly 6 to 24 inches down. The root zone reaches out from the tree at least as far as the tree is tall. And a tree needs at least half its root system kept intact to stay healthy.
UF/IFAS Extension describes a carpet of roots just under the surface, reaching past the drip line. The drip line is the edge of the canopy. It is not where the roots stop.
The risk is the base, not the grass
Turf is a thin layer. The harm comes from the work that goes in under it:
- Cutting out the lawn and grading. CSU says surface grading strips away topsoil that holds many of the small roots a tree drinks through.
- Digging for the base. Thornton’s 2026 rules call for a base at least three inches deep. Atlantic Beach, Florida asks for at least four. In clay, that is the layer where CSU puts half the roots.
- Compacting it. The International Society of Arboriculture says compaction slows root growth, limits how far water soaks in, and cuts the oxygen roots need.
- Changing the ground. The ISA counts grading, altering drainage patterns, and adding or removing soil in a tree’s critical root zone as root damage.
None of this shows right away. The ISA says construction damage may take many years to affect a tree.
Then there is water. CSU points out that a tree that has grown in a lawn for decades is used to the extra water. Once turf goes in, that sprinkler water usually stops. In Florida it has to: the state rule says in-ground irrigation cannot be used to water synthetic turf. CSU names most oaks and maples, ash, blue spruce and aspen as trees that need ample water all their lives, and advises watering the whole root zone, well past the drip line.
What the written rules say
Three sets of rules in the areas we serve spell out tree limits. What follows is a summary. Check the current text with the office that enforces it.
Florida, statewide. Rule 62-308.100, in force since 19 May 2026, sets minimum standards for synthetic turf on single-family lots of an acre or less. An install “cannot compromise the health of nearby trees,” root damage included. Turf may not go inside a tree’s drip line, on your lot or a neighbor’s, unless the tree is a listed noxious weed or a certified arborist certifies from the specific site that it would not harm the tree.
Atlantic Beach, Florida. The city’s turf installation guidelines say turf should stay out from under drip lines where possible. Where it has to go under a canopy:
- keep it at least 18 to 24 inches from the base of the tree
- keep the subbase no deeper than 3 inches
- compact it lightly, and only lightly
- keep every layer permeable to water and oxygen
- never let water pool or collect at the base of the tree
The city also asks for a site plan showing the turf against your trees and property lines, and inspects the base before the turf goes down. The state rule applies there too, so ask the city how the two fit together for your lot.
Thornton, Colorado. Thornton’s 2026 turf rules set buffers: three feet from the trunk of any deciduous tree, and no closer than the drip line of any evergreen. The buffer must be permeable, such as wood mulch, gravel, or rock no more than two inches across. Thornton also requires a Minor Development Permit before turf goes in.
Elsewhere in the Denver metro, look it up. CSU notes that many Colorado towns and cities write tree protection into their land use code. Ask your planning department before the edge is set.
Where to stop the turf
No single distance fits every tree. Age, species, condition and soil all change the answer. That is why the ISA recommends having an ISA Certified Arborist define a tree protection zone before work starts.
Three reference points help you plan:
- The drip line. CSU’s lawn-removal advice sets a protection zone at least as wide as the canopy, with equipment and materials kept out for the whole project.
- The trunk rule. For trees older than four years, CSU’s fact sheet extends protection past the drip line by one foot for every inch of trunk diameter. A tree with a 12-inch trunk gets its drip line plus 12 feet.
- Your local minimum. Three feet from a deciduous trunk in Thornton. At least 18 to 24 inches, over a shallow base, in Atlantic Beach. Outside the drip line anywhere the Florida rule applies, unless an arborist certifies otherwise.
A local minimum is a floor, not a target. The farther back the edge sits, the fewer roots the base touches.
Some trees need more room than others. UF/IFAS lists trees that are especially sensitive to compacted soil, including laurel oak, white oak, pines, sweetgum, dogwood and most nut trees, such as pecan.
What goes around the trunk instead
The ground between the turf and the trunk should let water and air reach the roots. CSU suggests a 4-inch layer of wood chips or gravel spread evenly over bare soil. It advises against black plastic and woven plastic weed barrier. UF/IFAS advises mulch about three inches deep, kept well away from the trunk. In Thornton, the buffer itself has to be mulch, gravel or small rock.
Plan the tree’s water at the same time. If sprinklers used to reach it, it will need a hose, soaker hose or drip line across the root zone. CSU suggests watching the tree for several years afterwards, and adding water if the canopy thins or growth slows.

Before anyone digs near a tree
- Mark the drip line of every tree that shades the area, a neighbor’s included.
- Measure each trunk across, about 4.5 feet up.
- Find your written rule: the Florida standard, your city’s guidelines, or your Colorado town’s code.
- In Florida, get an arborist’s certification in writing before turf goes inside any drip line.
- Choose the ring: wood chips or gravel, no plastic, kept off the trunk.
- Keep stone piles and machines off the root zone.
- Plan the tree’s water for when the sprinklers stop, and watch the canopy for a few years.
