The Grand Strand

# Backyard putting greens on the Grand Strand, where your community's rules come first.

Golf communities here answer differently, from greens allowed behind the house to no artificial grass at all. Check yours, then we measure, draw a layout and give a written price.

The short answer

## Can I put an artificial putting green in a Grand Strand golf community?

It depends on your community. Dye Estates at Barefoot Resort allows greens behind the house, but Barefoot's master guidelines and Brunswick Plantation both prohibit artificial turf. Get your committee's answer in writing before you plan one.

- ### Barefoot Resort, North Myrtle Beach

Barefoot’s master guidelines prohibit artificial turf, but Dye Estates makes an exception for putting greens behind the house, under its 40% impervious cap. Ask your neighborhood’s committee to confirm in writing before you plan one.

See the rule on barefoot resort, north myrtle beach

At Barefoot, your neighborhood decides which rule you start from.

Barefoot Resort’s master [architectural guidelines](https://www.barefoothoa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/ARC_Guidelines_2025-06-01.pdf), revised June 1, 2025, say “Artificial Turf & Vegetation are prohibited,” and repeat it under landscaping. The same guidelines give Leatherleaf and Dye Estates their own review committees, with “primary responsibility for review and approval of applications” in those neighborhoods.

Dye Estates’ own [guidelines](https://www.barefoothoa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/DES_ARC_Guidelines_V5_4.pdf), version 5.4, effective March 20, 2023, make an exception: “With the exception of putting greens, no artificial grass, plants, or other artificial vegetation shall be placed or maintained on the exterior of any Lot unless approved by the ARC.” Greens must sit to the rear of the house, and the limit of 40 percent impervious lot surface applies to them. A backyard green is listed among minor backyard changes of 500 square feet or less that need no application. You still follow the committee’s guidance, and that exception doesn’t cover new home construction. The master guidelines were revised in June 2025, after that version, and still list artificial turf as prohibited, so ask the Dye Estates committee to confirm your green in writing.

Leatherleaf’s [guidelines](https://www.barefoothoa.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/LLS_ARC_Guidelines_2024.pdf) carry no date of their own; Barefoot posted the file in July 2024. They don’t mention artificial turf. They require committee approval for changes to an approved landscape plan, except minor ones, so ask the Leatherleaf committee whether your green counts as minor and whether a newer version applies. Anywhere else in Barefoot, start from the master prohibition.

- ### River Hills, Little River

River Hills requires ARB approval for any landscaping change, and at least 30% of the site must stay pervious, open space. The manual doesn’t say whether a green counts, so ask first.

See the rule on river hills, little river

At River Hills, fit the green around your green-space and sod rules.

River Hills’ [ARB standards manual](https://riverhillspoa.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Filed-POA-Rules-ARB-Manual-Rev-9-NOV2021-1.pdf), Revision 9 of November 9, 2021, says anyone who wants to build or alter improvements or landscaping “must submit a request for approval to the ARB.” At least 30 percent of the total site must be “pervious, open, landscaped space.” Each lot must also keep “a sodded area from curbside to a minimum of 50 percent of side dimension of residence,” in an approved sod such as St. Augustine, Centipede, Bermuda or Zoysia.

The manual doesn’t say whether a green counts as landscaped space. Take your plan to the ARB and ask, and keep the green outside the required sodded area. Our [Little River page](https://www.timelessgrass.com/grand-strand/little-river-sc/) covers green sizes for patio-home and larger lots.

- ### Sea Trail, Sunset Beach

Sea Trail limits built-upon area to the stormwater master plan's figure but doesn't say how turf counts, so ask in writing. Front yards need at least 40% sodded area.

See the rule on sea trail, sunset beach

At Sea Trail, ask how a green counts against your built-upon area.

As of September 2026, Sea Trail Master Association keeps its current documents behind a login, so ask the administrator for the current standards first. The publicly posted [standards](https://seatrailma.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/ASC-Standards-version-March-31-2019.pdf) are dated March 21, 2019 on the cover and called the March 31, 2019 version inside. They limit each lot’s built-upon area to the amount shown on a stormwater master plan approved by the State of North Carolina. Built-upon area includes, but isn’t limited to, structures, asphalt, concrete, gravel, brick, stone, slate and coquina.

That list doesn’t settle how turf or the base under a green counts, so ask the committee in writing. The same standards require “a minimum of 40% sodden area” in the front yard landscaped area, and lots within a CAMA Area of Environmental Concern may have their built-upon allowance reduced. Check both before you pick a spot.

- ### Calabash and Ocean Isle Beach

Brunswick Plantation’s standards ban artificial grass outright but don’t mention putting greens by name, so ask the Architectural Standards Committee in writing. Ocean Ridge doesn't post its standards publicly, so ask its committee for them.

See the rule on calabash and ocean isle beach

Brunswick Plantation bars artificial grass. Ocean Ridge doesn’t post its standards.

As of September 2026, Brunswick Plantation POA’s [documents page](https://bppoa.sites.townsq.io/3) lists its design standards as the file “ASC Standards (10.31.2022) update 8.14.2026.pdf.” Its minimum planting requirements say lawn areas must be sodded with centipede, a zoysia with similar texture, Bermuda or St. Augustine, and end: “No Artificial grass is permitted.” The rule doesn’t name putting greens, so ask the Architectural Standards Committee in writing whether it covers a green behind the house before you plan one.

As of September 2026, Ocean Ridge Master Association lists an Architectural Standards Committee on its public [community page](https://engage.goenumerate.com/s/orma/index.php), but no standards document is posted there. Ask the committee for the current document before you choose a shape or size.

- ### Shaping the breaks

A green's breaks are shaped into the ground, and most communities here have grading or drainage rules. Ask what drawings your committee needs; we measure and check the ground at the free visit.

See the rule on shaping the breaks

A green’s contours are grading, and these communities have rules for it.

The breaks in a green are shaped into the ground under the turf. Barefoot’s master guidelines send major grading changes such as berms and mounds for review and say “Water cannot be directed to flow onto a neighboring property.” Brunswick Plantation requires committee approval for fill, land shaping and drainage, and its landscape submittals must show existing and proposed contours “with arrows indicating the direction of water flow.” River Hills keeps topographic changes inside your lot, meeting neighboring lots at natural grade. Sea Trail’s tree-preservation rules say the committee shall be informed of all plans for land filling, shaping and drainage, and its run-off section cites State requirements to control run-off on your own property.

So ask your committee what drawings a green needs and who must prepare them. On the free visit, we measure and check the ground and drainage. Then we draw a custom layout you approve before work starts, and handle the site prep and a base built for your soil. Our [Myrtle Beach page](https://www.timelessgrass.com/grand-strand/myrtle-beach-sc/) explains how the ground changes across the city. If an old or flooded green has to come out first, see [turf replacement on the Grand Strand](https://www.timelessgrass.com/grand-strand/turf-removal-and-replacement/).

FAQ

## Questions about putting greens in The Grand Strand.

### Can I replace an old green where the rules now ban turf?

Ask the committee in writing whether replacing an existing green needs a new application under the current rule. If it’s allowed, we remove the old turf, rebuild the base where it needs it and lay a new green to a layout you approve.

### My community isn’t listed here. What should I ask?

Ask your architectural committee for its current guidelines and recorded covenants. Then ask in writing whether a putting green is allowed, where on the lot it can go, whether it needs an application and how it counts toward any impervious or green-space limit.

### What should I bring to the free visit?

Bring your community’s current architectural document and any written answer from the committee, your survey or plot plan, any storm water worksheet on file and photos of where water sits after heavy rain. They help us draw a layout that starts from your lot’s limits.
