Whether a landscaping change at an existing home is caught by it is the city's call: ask the Planning Division whether Sec. 26-19-5 applies to your project and what counts toward the 75%. Where the rule creates a practical difficulty, the planning director can grant a variance. The code itself is on the way out. Lafayette is rewriting its land use code for the first time in nearly 40 years, and City Council's final vote is scheduled for 15 September 2026 ([Lafayette Listens](https://lafayette-listens.com/landusecode)). It also maps two poorly drained soils, Calkins and Loveland, in the low ground along Coal Creek and around Waneka Lake and Baseline Reservoir. Flat ground, swelling clay and a high water table are the mix that leaves standing water and soft spots under a poorly built lawn. So a Lafayette base is about drainage: a sub-base that lets water through and a surface with positive fall, so rain leaves the yard instead of sitting under the turf.
