## Can low-voltage landscape lighting wire run under artificial turf?

Yes. A 12-volt or 24-volt landscape lighting circuit qualifies for the shallowest cover depth in the National Electrical Code's underground wiring table, 6 inches, for cable rated for direct burial. The wire can sit under a turf base if it is planned before the base goes in, since turf and the compacted layers beneath it are not something you want to reopen once they are seamed and edged.

## Start with what the wire needs, not what the turf needs

Uplighting for a palm, a live oak or a pergola post usually runs on a low-voltage circuit: a transformer near an outlet steps household current down to 12 or 24 volts, then thin cable carries that low voltage out to each fixture. That circuit can go under a turf base. The question that decides the layout is where the wire sits relative to the compacted layers you are building, not whether turf is allowed on top of it.

Get the wire’s position settled before the base goes in. Turf, once it is laid, seamed and edged over a compacted base, is not a surface you want to open back up for a wire run that could have been planned in.

## The burial depth rule

The National Electrical Code sets minimum cover requirements for underground wiring in a table structured by wiring method and location — [Table 300.5(A)](https://www.nfpa.org/news-blogs-and-articles/blogs/2025/02/03/overview-of-nec-article-300), which NFPA describes as running five columns by seven rows, from wiring under a building to wiring under an airport runway. Cover is measured from finished grade down to the top of the cable or conduit.

A circuit for irrigation control or landscape lighting, running at 30 volts or less and using Type UF cable or another identified cable or raceway, falls in the column with the shallowest depth the table sets for any wiring method: a minimum of 6 inches for the general case the table calls “all locations not specified below.” The one condition that changes that figure is running the wire under a building, where the table drops to zero cover, but only for the wire in a raceway or in Type MC or Type MI cable identified for direct burial — not the ordinary direct-burial cable the 6-inch depth assumes ([NFPA’s published Table 300.5(A)](https://www.nfpa.org/-/media/Project/Storefront/Catalog/Images/Blogs/Electrical/table3005A-nec.png)). That is why a landscape lighting transformer matters to the layout even before the fixtures are chosen: it is what makes the run downstream of it a 30-volt-or-less circuit in the first place.

Six inches is measured to finished grade, and a turf system adds only a fraction of an inch of finished grade beyond the base it sits on. The depth has to work against the compacted base and sub-base, not just the turf.

The table also carries a footnote on that 6-inch figure: a lesser depth is permitted where it is specified in the installation instructions of a listed low-voltage lighting system. That is a manufacturer’s own instructions setting the number, not a blanket rule, so it is worth checking rather than assuming for any specific fixture set.

## What a professional install handles

Once the layout is one you approve, the wire goes in at the right depth as part of grading and base work, before turf is laid, seamed and edged over it. That sequence is what keeps a later lighting addition from turning into a turf repair.

## Questions to settle before the layout is final

A few decisions belong in the planning conversation, not after the base is compacted:

-   **Where is the transformer going, and what does it feed?** Every fixture downstream of a listed low-voltage transformer is part of that 30-volt-or-less circuit.
-   **Which fixture locations are fixed now, and which might come later?** A palm getting uplighting this year and a pergola getting it next year both need their wire path decided at the same time, even if the fixture is added later.
-   **Does any run cross a spot you expect to dig again?** A bed line that gets replanted, a future post hole or a path you might extend is where a protective sleeve is worth the extra step, separate from the depth requirement itself.
-   **Where does the wire cross from the house or a structure to the yard?** That transition point is easiest to plan before grading starts, harder to add afterward.

## Why the depth number matters more than it seems to

Six inches sounds like a small figure next to the several inches of compacted base most turf systems sit on. It matters anyway, for two reasons.

First, it is a minimum, not a target. A run that ends up shallower than 6 inches of cover because grading shifted, or because a low spot got filled after the wire was set, no longer meets the depth the code sets for that circuit. The wire’s position has to survive the grading and compaction steps that come after it is placed, not just the moment it goes in the trench.

Second, “finished grade” is the reference point, and finished grade is whatever is on top when the job is done, turf included. A run measured against bare soil before the base goes in has to account for how much material is coming on top of it, so the 6 inches is still there once the base and turf are finished.

## Where a sleeve is a separate decision

Direct-burial cable meeting the depth requirement does not need conduit to satisfy that requirement. A section of PVC conduit is something a professional install may still add, and it is worth being clear about why: it is physical protection, not a depth substitute.

A sleeve makes the most sense where a run crosses ground that is likely to be disturbed again after the turf is down — under a path, past a spot where a post or a planter might go in later, or anywhere a future project is more likely than not. It also makes a later addition easier: a sleeve left with pull string in it lets new wire go in without opening the turf at all, only the ends.

None of that changes the base requirement. A run with no reasonable chance of being dug into again does not need a sleeve to meet the code; a run that is likely to be disturbed is where the extra step earns its place in the plan.

## In the yard, not just on paper

None of this changes what turf itself needs. The base under it still gets built for your soil, and the layout you approve still accounts for drainage, edges and how the space gets used. Landscape lighting wire is one more thing the plan accounts for, at the same time as everything else, so the finished lawn does not need to come back up for it.

Before the layout is final:

1.  **Mark every current and likely-future fixture location**, even for lighting you plan to add later.
2.  **Confirm the transformer location and what it will power.**
3.  **Plan the wire path against the base and sub-base, not just the turf surface.**
4.  **Flag any run that crosses ground you expect to dig again**, and decide where a protective sleeve is worth adding.

## Common questions

### How deep does low-voltage landscape lighting wire need to be buried?

Under the National Electrical Code's Table 300.5(A), a circuit that controls irrigation or landscape lighting and runs at 30 volts or less, using Type UF cable or another identified cable or raceway, needs a minimum of 6 inches of cover in the column the code sets for that circuit type. That is the shallowest depth the table sets for any wiring method, measured from the top of the cable to finished grade. A transformer that steps household power down to 12 or 24 volts is what makes the lighting circuit itself qualify for that column. The table carries one exception worth knowing before the layout is final -- a lesser depth is permitted where the installation instructions of a listed low-voltage lighting system specify one.

### Does the wire have to be in conduit?

Not to meet the minimum depth on its own. Cable identified for direct burial can go straight in the ground at 6 inches. A sleeve of PVC conduit is a separate decision, usually made where wire crosses a spot people expect to dig again, such as a future bed line or a path you might disturb later. Conduit does not change the depth the code sets; it adds physical protection.

### Does artificial turf change the burial depth requirement?

The code sets cover depth from finished grade, and turf raises finished grade only by the thickness of the backing and infill, a fraction of an inch. It does not substitute for the depth requirement. Plan the wire's position against the compacted base and sub-base you are building, not just against the turf on top.

### What happens if I want to add landscape lighting after the turf is down?

The wire has to get to the fixture location somehow, and cutting into finished, seamed turf to trench a new run is exactly the rework a plan avoids. That is why the fixture and wire layout gets settled during the design step, before the base goes in, even for lighting that comes later.
