Yes. Concentrated reflected sunlight can shrink or melt turf fibers. A damaged patch alone does not identify the source, so record when and where a bright reflection appears. Discuss the glass and possible screening with the window professional before repairing turf or changing the window.

## Yes, and the window’s shape is the reason

Double-pane, low-e windows are now generally required by building and energy codes on new homes, according to the [National Association of Home Builders](https://www.nahb.org/-/media/NAHB/advocacy/docs/legal-issues/construction-liability/builder-resources/sunlight-double-paned-low-e-windows-2014.pdf?rev=fb03e4331f8141efbda3508a579d00d2&hash=F7B7A97FA265DB9CF04D00587A3135A5) (NAHB). Between the two panes sits a sealed pocket of gas.

That gas shrinks as it cools. To keep the pressure balanced, the glass flexes inward and the outer pane turns very slightly concave. [Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory](https://www.osti.gov/servlets/purl/1050447) calls this normal, not a defect. The trouble is what a concave pane does with sunlight: any concavity focuses the reflection at some distance from the glass. NAHB compares it to a magnifying glass, with the focused light showing up as a small, brilliant, star-shaped spot.

Low-e glass makes the spot stronger. NAHB quotes a U.S. Department of Energy spokesperson: clear glass reflects about 10% of the sun’s energy, low-e glass 30 to 50%.

## How hot the spot gets

NAHB reports the focused reflection has been measured above 200°F at its point of focus, well above what direct sun does to the same surface. That’s more than enough to distort vinyl siding, which the Vinyl Siding Institute says can soften from 160 to 165°F.

Siding gets the attention because a wall is a big target. NAHB also lists damage reports for other plastic products, including car parts, lawn furniture, decking and window trim, and LBNL adds house wraps and garbage cans.

Turf fibers are plastic too: polyethylene, nylon or polypropylene, according to New Jersey’s environment department. The Synthetic Turf Council, the industry’s trade association, has reported random instances of polyethylene turf fibers shrinking and melting from reflected heat, particularly off low-e glass. The published temperature measurements are of siding, not turf, so treat any exact “melting point” you see quoted with care.

A spot on the lawn is in direct sun as well, so the beam adds to heat that’s already there. ## What makes it likelier

The same window can be harmless for months and then leave a mark, because several things have to line up:

-   **Cold.** LBNL explains that the gas between the panes contracts as it cools, pulling the glass inward. By its figures, a 20°F change shifts the pressure balance by about half a pound per square inch.
-   **Argon fill.** Argon is a common fill in energy-efficient windows. LBNL notes that with some sealants, argon escapes faster than air gets in, lowering the pressure inside and bowing the glass inward, and NAHB reports more deflection in argon windows.
-   **Distance.** In NAHB’s 2011 builder survey, most siding damage happened within 30 feet of the window, though distances up to 100 feet have been reported.
-   **The sun’s angle.** A beam leaves the glass at the angle the sunlight arrived, so where it lands shifts through the day and the seasons. NAHB lists sun angle, wind, air temperature and plants in the way among the factors.
-   **Orientation.** The Synthetic Turf Council aims its advice at low-e windows and doors that face south.

## Why it’s less common in Denver

NAHB says double-pane windows for homes above 5,000 feet are made with capillary tubes: tiny vents that let the air between the panes equalize with the air outside, so the glass bows less. It credits those tubes for how few siding reports come from the high-altitude West.

Less common isn’t never. NAHB notes the tubes can’t be used in argon-filled windows, and [Cardinal](https://www.cardinalcorp.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/IG14_08-2022.pdf), a glass manufacturer, says a tube may not remove all the deflection. A hot spot in a Front Range yard is still worth checking for.

## How to stop it

Deal with the beam before the turf. NAHB makes the point about siding, and it holds for turf: replacing the damaged piece fixes nothing while the conditions that caused it keep coming back.

1.  **Find the window.** The Synthetic Turf Council suggests checking in the middle of a hot, sunny day, including reflections from second-story windows. Look for the bright spot on the ground and trace it back to the glass. It may be yours or a neighbor’s.
2.  **Add an exterior screen.** NAHB reports that a screen over the window has been shown to reduce the damage by diffusing the reflection. Cardinal states that a screen can block more than 40% of the reflected energy. Fixed windows and casements often can’t take one.
3.  **Or hang an awning.** NAHB lists an awning over the window as another fix.
4.  **Block the beam.** A shrub, a small tree, a trellis or a fence panel between the glass and the turf works. NAHB says planting or any barrier that blocks the reflected light stops the damage.
5.  **Plan around it.** Where screening isn’t practical, the Synthetic Turf Council recommends a landscape plan with planted areas or hardscape where the reflected heat lands.
6.  **When windows get replaced.** NAHB notes that capillary tubes and thicker double-strength glass, 1/8 inch instead of 3/32, both bow less.

## If the turf is already marked

## A quick checklist

1.  On a hot, sunny day, look for a bright spot on the turf.
2.  Trace it back to the glass, upstairs and next door included.
3.  Put a screen or an awning on that window.
4.  Use plants, a trellis or a fence panel if the window can’t change.
5.  Replace damaged turf only after the beam is blocked.

## Common questions

### Is it my window or my neighbor's?

It can be either. On a hot, sunny day, look for a small, very bright spot on the turf and trace it back to the glass; the Synthetic Turf Council notes the beam can come from a second story. When the window is next door, [NAHB](https://www.nahb.org/-/media/NAHB/advocacy/docs/legal-issues/construction-liability/builder-resources/sunlight-double-paned-low-e-windows-2014.pdf?rev=fb03e4331f8141efbda3508a579d00d2&hash=F7B7A97FA265DB9CF04D00587A3135A5) notes that a screen or awning needs your neighbor's cooperation, and that plants or a barrier on your side that block the beam work too.

### Will a window screen stop it?

It usually helps a lot. [NAHB](https://www.nahb.org/-/media/NAHB/advocacy/docs/legal-issues/construction-liability/builder-resources/sunlight-double-paned-low-e-windows-2014.pdf?rev=fb03e4331f8141efbda3508a579d00d2&hash=F7B7A97FA265DB9CF04D00587A3135A5) reports that an exterior screen has been shown to reduce the damage by diffusing the reflection, and [one glass manufacturer states](https://www.cardinalcorp.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/IG14_08-2022.pdf) that a screen can block more than 40% of the reflected energy. Fixed windows and casements often can't take an exterior screen, so an awning or a barrier is the fallback.

### Can a window reflection start a fire?

The research points to melting and warping, not flames. The readings [NAHB reports](https://www.nahb.org/-/media/NAHB/advocacy/docs/legal-issues/construction-liability/builder-resources/sunlight-double-paned-low-e-windows-2014.pdf?rev=fb03e4331f8141efbda3508a579d00d2&hash=F7B7A97FA265DB9CF04D00587A3135A5) stayed under 250°F, below the 451°F it gives for wood to catch fire, and it found no reported fires caused by window reflections.

### Does this happen in Denver?

Less often, by the reports.
