Turf is plastic Artificial turf fibers are made of polyethylene, nylon or polypropylene, according to New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection. Plastic softens and melts with enough heat, and it burns. The small stuff shows it first. The UK’s Sports and Play Construction Association tells field managers to treat synthetic pitches as no-smoking areas, because [a dropped cigarette can melt the fibers](https://sapca.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/SAPCA_Code_of_Practice_Construction_Maintenance_Synthetic_Turf_01.pdf) and leave a mark. Treat grill coals, fire-pit sparks and fireworks the same way. The useful questions are what a spec sheet’s fire rating tells you, and where the turf should stop. ## What the pill test on a spec sheet means Turf spec sheets may list a flammability result under ASTM D2859, the methenamine “pill test”. It was written for carpets and rugs, and the federal carpet standard uses the same method. Here is how it works under [16 CFR 1630](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/16/1630.4): - A methenamine tablet is set in the center of an 8-inch hole in a flattening frame laid over the sample. - The tablet is lit with a match and left to burn out. - The lab measures how far the char spread. - The product passes if the char stays more than 1 inch from the edge of the hole on at least seven of eight samples. The Consumer Product Safety Commission describes these standards as a test of surface flammability when exposed to a small ignition source. That is all it is. [ASTM’s scope note for D2859](https://store.astm.org/d2859-16r21.html) says the test describes how a material responds to heat and flame under controlled conditions, and doesn’t, by itself, assess fire hazard or fire risk in a real fire. So a pass tells you a small flame won’t spread far across the surface in a lab. It doesn’t make turf fire-resistant, and it says nothing about embers in a wildfire. ## Wildfire: keep turf out of the first 5 feet Wind-driven embers are the leading cause of home ignitions, according to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). Its guidance calls for a [0–5 foot noncombustible zone](https://ibhs.org/wildfire/near-building-noncombustible-zone/) around a building, because embers collect at the base of exterior walls, and anything burning there puts flame and radiant heat against the house. The IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home checklist is specific about the ground in that zone: - **Remove** all combustible groundcover. The examples it gives are wood or rubber mulch, pine needles, artificial turf and exposed weed cloth. - **Use** only noncombustible materials: gravel, pavers, river rock, decomposed granite, stepping stones or concrete. The [Colorado State Forest Service](https://csfs.colostate.edu/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/2021_CSFS_HIZGuide_Web.pdf) says the same in its home ignition zone guide. In Zone 1, the first 5 feet from the home, it calls for nonflammable hard surfaces such as rock, gravel, sand, cement, bare earth or stone and concrete pavers, and for replacing combustible fencing within 5 feet of the home. On a layout, that’s a simple line to draw. The turf stops, and a gravel or paver strip runs along the foundation. ## Louisville’s code, and what it leaves out Louisville, [still rebuilding after the Marshall Fire](https://www.louisvilleco.gov/departments/planning/marshall-fire-rebuilding/), adopted a [fire hardening code](https://www.louisvilleco.gov/departments/building-safety/building-codes/fire-hardening-code/) by ordinance in 2024. Two parts touch the yard: - A fence within 5 feet of a home or commercial building must be fire- and ignition-resistant: Class A under ASTM E84 or UL 723, or metal, masonry or stone. - Since 21 January 2026, junipers can’t be planted, relocated or replaced with another juniper. The code doesn’t mention artificial turf. That isn’t a green light. The guidance above from IBHS and the Colorado State Forest Service is plain about what belongs in the first 5 feet, whatever a local code says or leaves out. HOAs can have a say too. Colorado law stops an association banning turf in the back yard of a detached home, but it keeps carve-outs for bona fide safety requirements and for fire buffers and defensible space. It means the heat gets its own ground: - **Fire pits, grills and patio heaters** sit on a pad of pavers, gravel or concrete, with the turf edge well back from it. - **Fireworks** stay off the lawn, the launch and the fallout both. - **No smoking on the turf**, the same rule sports pitches use. - **A hose within reach** of any outdoor fire. Don’t lean on labels. For the ground next to a house, the IBHS checklist makes no exception for plants that are irrigated or labeled fire-resistant, and it doesn’t accept fire-resistant fence materials such as vinyl or composite either. Noncombustible is the standard. ## What to plan 1. **Stop the turf short of the house** where wildfire is a real risk, and fill the first 5 feet with gravel, pavers or concrete. 2. **Give every heat source its own pad.** Fire pit, grill, heater: hardscape, not turf. 3. **Read the spec sheet for what it is.** A pill-test pass is a small-flame lab test. 4. **Check your town and your HOA** before building next to the house. Louisville has its own code, and an HOA can still require a fire buffer. 5. **Keep water close.** A hose bib near the patio covers the grill and the fire pit. Not in the way that matters in a wildfire. A pass on the pill test shows a surface resists a small ignition source, and [ASTM's scope note](https://store.astm.org/d2859-16r21.html) says the test doesn't, by itself, assess fire hazard or fire risk under real fire conditions. Wildfire guidance from IBHS treats artificial turf as combustible groundcover. ### Can I put a fire pit or grill on artificial turf? Not directly on it. The fibers are plastic, and the UK's sports surface builders tell field managers that even [a dropped cigarette can melt them](https://sapca.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/SAPCA_Code_of_Practice_Construction_Maintenance_Synthetic_Turf_01.pdf). Give a fire pit or grill its own pad of pavers, gravel or concrete, with the turf edge well back from it. ### What does a pill test pass actually mean? Colorado law stops an association banning turf in the back yard of a detached home, but SB23-178 keeps carve-outs for bona fide safety requirements and for fire buffers and defensible space.
