Sod gives you living grass that needs establishment and ongoing lawn care. Artificial turf removes mowing and irrigation for grass growth from the converted area, but still needs cleaning and maintenance and can become hot in sun. Artificial turf is plastic grass laid over a stone base. Here is how they compare on the things people ask about most: - **Water.** Sod needs it every week in season. Turf needs none, apart from a rinse. - **Upkeep.** Sod needs mowing, feeding and reseeding. Turf needs brushing, rinsing and the odd infill top-up. - **Getting started.** Sod needs weeks of daily watering to root. Turf is ready when the install is done. - **Pets.** Dogs wear paths, dig and leave yellow spots in grass. Turf ends that, but needs rinsing. - **Heat.** Grass stays cool. Turf gets much hotter in full sun. ## Water: sod drinks, turf doesn’t A green lawn in a dry climate runs on irrigation. [Colorado State University Extension](https://www.extension.colostate.edu/docs/pubs/garden/07199.pdf) says Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass lawns in Colorado must get extra water to survive, and that bluegrass may need 2.5 inches or more a week in the heat of summer. Florida’s sand drains fast, so lawns there need water more often. [UF/IFAS](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/LH025) says it takes 1/2 to 3/4 inch to wet the root zone each time, and to water when the grass shows stress: blades folding in half, a blue-gray tint, or footprints that stay. Then there are the rules on when you can water: - **Denver Water** has declared a Stage 1 drought: two assigned days a week, only before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. Its board has also ended lawn watering for the season after 30 September. - **Castle Rock** assigns two days a week by the last digit of your address, before 8 a.m. or after 8 p.m. - **Northeast Florida’s** normal rule is twice a week in summer and once a week in winter, never between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Since May, the water management district’s Phase III order has cut that to one day a week, with no watering between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Turf takes that lawn off the schedule. On the Front Range, Resource Central counts about 10 gallons saved each year for every square foot of lawn converted. At Denver Water’s 2026 top in-city tier, $9.45 per 1,000 gallons with the drought charge, that is about $94.50 a year for 1,000 square feet. The saving is real, but the bigger difference is a lawn that stays green whatever the watering rules say. ## Getting started: sod needs weeks of watering to root New sod is thirsty. It has no roots in your soil yet, so it needs daily water for weeks, and watering rules make room for that only up to a point: - **Denver Water** issues establishment permits to water new sod for up to three weeks, but has said none will be issued after 30 September until further notice. - **The St. Johns River district’s** current order allows new plantings every day for 15 days, up to three days a week for the next 30, then two days a week for the last 15. - **Clay County Utility Authority** offers a sod credit that eases the bill for 30 days while new sod roots, after a conservation check by its technician. - **Aurora’s** drought rules go further: no new cool-weather turf can be installed. Turf has no rooting period. Once it is laid, seamed, edged and infilled, you can use it. ## Upkeep: different jobs, not no jobs Grass needs mowing, feeding, weeding and reseeding worn spots, plus the watering. New Jersey’s environment department notes that synthetic surfaces skip all of that: mowing, seeding, watering, pesticides and fertilizers. It adds that they still need maintenance, like raking and adding infill. For a yard, that means brushing now and then, clearing leaves, rinsing pet areas and topping up infill where it thins. It is less work, and none of it is on a schedule set by the water utility. ## Pets: mud and yellow spots, or rinsing Dogs are hard on grass. They wear paths, dig and burn yellow spots, and a wet lawn turns into muddy paws. The New Jersey report points out that synthetic surfaces can be used right after rain, even during it, while grass turns muddy and gets damaged if used wet. Turf asks for a different routine: pick up solids, rinse where the dog goes, and clean the busiest spots now and then. [Pet turf](https://www.timelessgrass.com/services/pet-turf/) is built to drain so liquid moves through the turf and into the base. ## Heat: this is where grass wins In direct sun, turf gets much hotter than grass. In a [Brigham Young University study](https://www.westcoastturf.com/getdoc.cfm?id=38), synthetic turf averaged 117°F across a summer day against 78°F for natural grass. If the lawn sits in full afternoon sun and gets used barefoot, weigh this one carefully. Many yards end up with both: turf where the dog runs or the grass never grew, and shade over the play area. ## Rebates: they pay to remove grass, not to add turf Water utilities pay people to take out thirsty lawns, but mostly not to put in turf. Castle Rock Water pays $3.25 a square foot for low-water plants and says artificial turf does not qualify for any part of the rebate. Turf is the better fit if: - watering rules make grass a fight, - dogs have worn the lawn to dirt, - the spot is shady or sloped and grass never took, or - you want your weekends back. A lot in summer. [Colorado State University Extension](https://www.extension.colostate.edu/docs/pubs/garden/07199.pdf) says Kentucky bluegrass may need 2.5 inches of water or more a week in the heat of summer. On Florida's sandy soils, [UF/IFAS](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/LH025) says it takes 1/2 to 3/4 inch to wet the root zone each time you water. ### Can I lay new sod during watering restrictions? Only within the rules for new plantings. Denver Water issues permits to water new sod for up to three weeks, but none after 30 September until further notice. Under the current order, the St. Johns River Water Management District allows new landscape a tapering 60-day watering schedule. Aurora's drought rules say no new cool-weather turf can be installed. ### Is turf or sod easier with dogs? Turf can be useful for a defined pet area, but plan drainage and cleaning before choosing it. New Jersey's environment department notes that synthetic surfaces can be used right after rain, while grass turns muddy and gets damaged if used wet. That general comparison is not a guarantee that every installation is ready immediately after rain. Turf needs rinsing where the dog goes, waste removal and regular care. ### Will I get a rebate for replacing sod with turf? Usually not. Castle Rock Water pays $3.25 a square foot to replace grass with low-water plants but says artificial turf does not qualify for any part of the rebate.
